JAZZ UNDERGROUND

CONCERT SERIES

There’s something special about hearing jazz underground. Literally.

Take the Village Vanguard in New York City, where some of the greatest jazz albums were recorded live by Sonny Rollins, Bill Evans and John Coltrane. Or just around the corner from there at Smalls NYC. Or over in Chicago, where for many years the renowned Jazz Showcase was situated in a Rush Street basement.

But did you know that we in Greenville also have great jazz underground?

About the Jazz Underground Series

The long-running Greenville Jazz Collective Jazz Underground Series has been expanding the ears of Greenville since 2012. Originally bringing live performance of the work of local composers to the Coffee Underground Theatre, the series now also includes tributes to important jazz musicians (many of them overlooked), exploration of different genres of jazz that may not be frequently heard, and special performance projects of local and other musicians.

These performances complement our educational mission by bringing the breadth of this important music to life on a monthly basis…often types of music you’d otherwise probably have to travel to New York to hear.
